| Jan van Huchtenburgh (1647-1733): Dutch painter,
graphic artist and copper engraver, publisher
and art dealer. 1708/09 he accompanied the Austrian
general Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignan (1663-1736)
on his campaigns. He painted and engraved all
important battles of the Prince. His pictures
remind us of the style of Philips Wouwerman
(1619-1668), after whose paintings he also made
etchings.

| Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignan (1663-1736):
Austrian general and patron of art. He grew
up at the court of Louis XIV of France. 1683
he escaped from France and joined the Austrian
Army. 1683 he participated the battle of Vienna
during the Great Ottoman Wars. 1693 he became
field marshal and 1697 he was in supreme command
of the Ottoman wars. During the War of the Spanish
Succession (1701-1713/14) he successfully fighted
against France. 1703 he became president of
the 'Hofkriegsrat' and already in 1707 he was
the field marshal of the Holy Roman Empire.
During the Ottoman Wars of 1714/16-18 he could
free the Ungarian from the Ottomans by the battle
of Petrovaradin (1716) and by conquering the
castle of Belgrade (1717).
Prince Eugene of
Savoy established the Great Power of Austria
within the Holy Roman Empire. As a friend and
patron of science and art he had a great collection
of books, which can be seen today in the state
room of the Austrian National Library, and he
built up several magnificent buildings in Vienna,
e.g. the 'Stadtpalais' and the baroque palace
complex Belvedere.
