Matthäus Merian (1593 Basle - 1650 Schwalbach; graphic artist, copper engraver, and publisher) took over the company of his father in law in Frankfurt 1624. Engraved many town views and maps (for Zeiller's Topographia or Gottfried's chronicle). From 1642 he published his own Topographia, the well known 'Theatrum Europeum'.
