Fort Pierre on the Missouri

This fort, one of the largest settlements of the
American Fur Company, was drawn by Bodmer from a distant
rise on April 29th, 1834. The modern capital of South
Dacota, Pierre, now stands across the river from this
side.

(1793-1858) after a drawing by Karl Bodmer (Joslyn's
collection KBA 184), from Prince Maximilian's “Travels
in the Interior of North America, 1832-1834”.
First state (Ruud 2004, p 112) for a German or French
edition, printed by Bougeard, Paris, 1837-43, on large
wove paper (papier vélin), published by Jakob Hölscher,
Koblenz, 1837-42 or by Arthus Bertrand, Paris, 1840-43.
