Síh-Chidä (Yellow Feather) and Máhchsi-Karéhde (Flying
War Eagle) - Mandan Indians
“Sih-Chidä and Mahchsi-Karehde. Mandan Indianer.
Indiens Mandans. Mandan Indians.” - Tab. 20.
Both Mandan Indians were frequent visitors to Maximilian
and Bodmer's cabin at Fort Clark in December 1833. 25
years old „Yellow Feather“, on the left, was fascinated
by Bodmer's portrait of him and asked for art supplies
to produce his own pictures.
“Flying War Eagle”, on the right, was, according
to Maximilian, the tallest Mandan. He often brought
his friends to see Bodmer's work. His portrait includes
an eagle wing fan and bear-claw necklace.
Aquatint, engraving and etching by Johann Hürlimann

Maximilian's “Travels in the Interior of North America,
