The scene closely resembles the description of a grizzly bear hunting Maximilian gave in his journal at July 18th, 1833.

Aquatint and etching by Lucas Weber (1811-1860) after watercolour paintings and drawings by Karl Bodmer, from Prince Maximilian's “Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-1834”.

First state (Ruud 2004, p 196) for a German or French edition, printed by Chardon the Elder & Aze, Paris, 1837-43, on wove paper (papier vélin), published by Jakob Hölscher, Koblenz, 1837-42 or by Arthus Bertrand, Paris, 1840-43.
