On August 7th, 1834, two days before they arrived
at Fort McKenzie, Maximilian and Bodmer glimpsed the
distant summits of the Rocky Mountains, rising impressively
above the Interior Plains. In September he and Bodmer
went into the hills above the river “to paint … the
Bears' Paw and to make a drawing of the first chain
of the Rocky Mountains”.
Original coloured aquatint and etching by Sigismond
Himely (1801-1872), fine original colours, partly printed
in colour, after a watercolour by Karl Bodmer, from
Prince Maximilian's “Travels in the Interior of North
America, 1832-1834”.
Rare first state (Ruud 2004, p 221) for the first
German edition, printed by Bougeard, Paris, 1837-40,
on wove paper (papier vélin), published by Jakob Hölscher,
Koblenz, 1837-42. Without the English title and the
publishers' credits.
Plate mark: 42 x 53,5 cm, paper size: 42,5
x 61,5 cm. With blind stamp: C. BODMER.
Very nice original old colours, partly printed in
colour. Paper somewhat toned, as usual for the original
coloured prints. At all very good condition.
