Boston Lighthouse
“Boston Lighthouse.” - Vig: I.
Bodmer produced a watercolour of this subject while
a passenger on the “Janus”, which entered the port of
Boston with cannons firing to celebrate the 56th anniversary
of independence.

Rare first state (Ruud 2004, p 238) for the first
German edition, printed by Bougeard, Paris, 1837, on
wove paper (papier vélin), published by Jakob Hölscher,
Koblenz, 1837-40.
Plate mark: 22 x 28 cm, paper size: 31 x 45 cm. With
blind stamp: C. BODMER.
'Vignette I was completed by August 1837 and an invoice
documents that Bodmer shipped one hundred examples to
Hölscher in May 1838 ... The first one hundred examples
sent to Hölscher for publication were first states that
contain only the English titles, which was quite unusual.'
