Bodmer and Maximilian set out for this settlement in late July 1832. A hamlet of a thousand inhabitants on the stage line between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Bodmer sketched its various local attractions, including this view from atop the river.

Aquatint and etching by Lucas Weber (1811-1860) based on a watercolour by Karl Bodmer (Joslyn's collection KBA 27), from Prince Maximilian's “Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-1834”.

First state (Ruud 2004, p 246) for a German or French edition, printed by Bougeard, Paris, 1837-43, on wove paper (papier vélin), published by Jakob Hölscher, Koblenz, 1837-42 or by Arthus Bertrand, Paris, 1840-43.
