This view of the local colliery nine miles from town
with the railway connection for transporting coal down
the mountain, was especially attractive to Maximilian,
who was fascinated by the railway and fossil finds in
the anthracite coal of the region.
Aquatint and etching by Lucas Weber (1811-1860) after
a watercolour by Karl Bodmer, from Prince Maximilian's
“Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-1834”.
First state (Ruud 2004, p 251) for a German or French
edition, printed by Bougeard, Paris, 1837-43, on wove
paper (papier vélin), published by Jakob Hölscher, Koblenz,
1837-42 or by Arthus Bertrand, Paris, 1840-43.
Plate mark: 23 x 31 cm, paper size: 31 x 45 cm. With
