Twenty five miles beyond Shawnee Town („a dead, sad
place“) lay this unusual geological feature on the Illinois
side of the river, which Bodmer sketched.
Aquatint and etching by Lucas Weber (1811-1860) based
on watercolours and drawings by Karl Bodmer (Joslyn's
collection KBA 83, 84), from Prince Maximilian's “Travels
in the Interior of North America, 1832-1834”.
First state (Ruud 2004, p 253) for a German edition,
printed by Bougeard, Paris, 1837-42, on large wove paper
(papier vélin), published by Jakob Hölscher, Koblenz,
1837-42.
