The Mandan are a Native American tribe that historically lived about 1800 along the banks of the Missouri River and its tributary streams Heart and Knife River. Here we see one of their sacrifical altars with skulls. Bodmer painted it in November 1833 near the burial of Mih-Tutta-Hang-Kusch.
