Portrait of the chief Mexkemahuastan (Stirring Iron)
warrior of the Gros Ventres Indians. The chief was one
of the many Indians who boarded Bodmer's keelboat
during the Atsina camp encounter (see Tableau 38).
Bodmer depicted him as a fearsome individual, armed
with gun and bow, wearing his hair in the style of a
medicine man, with shell ornaments in his ears, and
with fringed and beaded leggings under his painted buffalo
robe.
Handcoloured aquatint, etching and engraving by Johann
Hürlimann (1793-1850) after watercolours and drawings
by Karl Bodmer, from Prince Maximilian's “Travels in
the Interior of North America, 1832-1834”.
First state (Ruud 2004, p 276) for a German or French
edition, printed by Bougeard, Paris, 1837-43, on chine
collé, published by Jakob Hölscher, Koblenz, 1837-42
or by Arthus Bertrand, Paris, 1840-43.
