An Arrikkara Warrior“ - Vig. XXVII.
This man, a member of a war party that attacked and
killed 3 traders near the Heart River in 1830, was a
proud warrior, who carries a gunstock club with a pointed
metal blade. His chest is decorated with marks to represent
gunshot and slash wounds, the ornaments in his hair
probably commemorate wounds and war deeds, while his
moccasins have bear claw bead designs.
Aquatint, mezzotint and etching by Talbot (unidentifed)
after watercolours by Karl Bodmer, from Prince Maximilian's
“Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-1834”.
First state (Ruud 2004, p 306) for a German or French
edition, printed by Bougeard, Paris, 1837-43, on large
wove paper (papier vélin), published by Jakob Hölscher,
Koblenz, 1837-42 or by Arthus Bertrand, Paris, 1840-43.
Plate mark: 32 x 23 cm, paper size: 61 x 44 cm (printed
on large paper). With blind stamp: C. BODMER.
