| Map of France with the provinces of the Order
of Saint Benedict. Tittle cartouche at upper left
and below a large, decorative cartouche with an
historical scene with the king of France, who is
sitting under a baldachin, and in front of him kneels
a Benedictine friar, who is holding a book in his
hand. Above the map is a single-line header with
the title in French, giving also the town and year
of publication ("... Norimberg, A. 1738.").
The Order of Saint Benedict became the standard
for Western Monasticism from the early Middle Ages.
Their rules were fundamental for all religious orders
until the 12th century. For Homann and his successors
religious and ecclesiastical themes had been of
great importance. In connection with this a series
of maps was published which shows the provinces
of the Order of Saint Benedict in Germany, Italy,
France and Spain. The map with the provinces in
France was made after Rupert Carl, who was a professor
at the Benedictine monastery of Weihenstephan in
Bavaria.
