Large map of the River Rhine, from the source in Switzerland to the mouth in the Netherlands, with the surrounding ares and the tributaries. At upper left: coats of arms of some towns of this area; at the right side: a dedication to Andreas Bicker of Amsterdam with his coat of arms and with Justitia, the Roman goddess of Justice; at lower right: the title cartouche with allegorical depictions.

Orig. coloured copper engraving, printed from two plates, engraved by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, published by Joan Blaeu, Amsterdam 1644, 42 x 95,5 cm.

Very good impression and perfect condition, very nice original colours, several times folded as usual.

Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571 - 1638)

Engraver, publisher and astronomer. Pupil of J. Hondius and T. Brahe. Founder of a firm in Amsterdam 1596, which produced terrestrial and celestial globes first, charts and maps from 1604, and atlases from 1631, and which was the leading company publishing maps and atlases almost for a whole century.

Joan Blaeu (1596 - 1673)

Cartographer and publisher in Amsterdam, son of W. Blaeu. He expanded the atlas 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', first issued by his father in two volumes 1635, up to 12 volumes until 1665 ('Atlas Major').
