One of the earliest maps of the Russian Empire
('Imperium'). On 22 October 1721 Peter I the
Great was officially proclaimed Emperor of All
Russia. In the title cartouche of our map (at
lower left) Peter I is already shown with an
Imperial Crown of Russia. The allegorical depictions
of the title cartouche give a hint to Perter's
support of science. In 1724 he founded an own
Russian Academy of Science. J.B. Homann had
direct contact to the Russian Imperial House
(see Lit. p 37), and therefore it can be assumed
that all the information he used for this map
he got soon and directly from the Imperial Court
in Saint Petersburg.
