Double-page woodcut map of
the known world before Christopher Columbus
discovered America. Map in the style of Claudius
Ptolemy (c90 - c168), the famous Greco-Roman
writer, geographer, astronomer and mathematician
of Alexandria.
The map is surrounded by a
border with twelve windheads. In three of its
corners are the portraits of Noah's sons (Jafet,
Sem and Ham), the lower left corner contains
a text about the four main winds. At left margin
are seven panels with outlandish creatures after
fables by Plinius, Herodot and others.
Verso: 14 more portraits of
strange creatures and descriptions about the
earth, its countries and residents.
