Carnival
of Venice. Etchings
by Francesco
Bertelli (etcher
and publisher
of the 16th/17th
century in Padua,
Italy) from:
Il Carnevale
Italiano Mascherato
Oue si Veggono
in Figura Varie
Inuetione di
capritii Fra(nces)co
Bert(ell)i.
[Venice], 1642.
A very rare
series of engravings
which show masquerades
related to the
Venetian carnival.
The people are
wearing fanciful
masks which
are caricatures
of people from
everyday life
or which represent
wild men or
demons.
Francesco
Bertelli was
a copper engraver,
etcher and publisher
in Padua who
worked in
the first half
of the seventeenth
century. Some
of the plates
were copied
from his father
Pietro's 'Diversarum
nationum habitus'
(1589).
